Born the eldest of five children in Belfast Northern Ireland to John & Meta Beggs, Aubrey & Martin’s early years were filled with the sounds of their dad’s show band rehearsing for the local dances where John sang and played drums. The Southlanders played the music of Hank Williams & Jim Reeves; Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald; Irish country dances & the new and exciting R&B sounds of Bill Haley, Buddy Holly & Elvis Presley.

When the family migrated to Australia in 1959 and settled in Cairns, Queensland the boys received a lasting gift from their hard-working parents who encouraged them to learn to read & play music with the Cairns Municipal Band where they both studied cornet. They also took vocal lessons and competed in the local eisteddfods and talent quests. At the age of 14 Aubrey started playing trumpet and singing with John’s dance bands and sometimes Martin would join them at dances throughout North Queensland.

The great Folk revival of the 60’s saw Aubrey & Martin learning guitar and experimenting with songwriting. The local Folk Centre attracted many great world music artists as well as promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, and it gave the boys a priceless opportunity to harmonise sea shanties, traditional Irish ballads as well as songs from groups like Simon & Garfunkel and Peter, Paul & Mary.  Aubrey was also attending jam sessions with local musicians at the Jazz Club, honing his improvisational skills on trumpet.

Leaving home in 1968, Aubrey moved to Sydney NSW for a year, then spent 1970 touring with popular Nth. Queensland showband The Fireflies playing trumpet and singing, backing some of the greats of Australian showbusiness including Lucky Starr, The Delltones, Kamahl and Johnny O’Keefe. He left the band in Brisbane Queensland where he met his wife Marion and where Martin was performing with one of Australia’s best-known and most enduring folk groups The Wayfarers with Stan Arthur.  Around this time Martin met Nell who was to become his wife.

The Brisbane club scene was where Aubrey & Martin put together their first cabaret shows and after a couple of very successful years (which included an ABC TV show “Around Folk” (hosted by Home & Away’s Ray Maher) and concert appearances with Harry Seccombe and Cheech & Chong they took their incredibly versatile act to the NSW club circuit which has enjoyed their talents since the mid `70s. They have supported many international artists including Burl Ives, Warren Mitchell and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

In both 1999 and 2000 they received the Australian Entertainment “MO” AWARD for Variety Duo of the Year. They have also received numerous nominations for the Australian Club Industry ACE Awards.

Aubrey & Martins' love of country music has seen them appear on the same bill as Kasey Chambers, Jimmy Little, Felicity Urquart, James Blundell, The Dead Ringer Band, Reg Lindsay etc, and has brought them nominations in various awards including the Steel City Songwriting Awards and the premier Australasian Country Music Awards (now called Country Music Awards Australia) where they have been finalists alongside John Williamson, Eric Bogle and The Bushwhackers. They have toured almost all of Australia & featured on numerous live ABC radio broadcasts from the Keith Michell Theatre, Port Pirie with their showband The Beggs Bros. They co-starred with Wayne Horsburgh, Elizabeth Garnett (and later Judy-Anne Barnes) in the long-running Love that Country Music Show. They have written and produced songs for many other artists through their Ridgeway Studio and have 8 albums to their credit, 7 of them released on their own Ridgeway label.

In 1990 they represented Australia with The Cooee Brothers (who were presenting the Jolly Swagman Show at the Argyle Tavern in Sydney's historic Rocks area) during Australia Week in San Francisco & Oakland, California; and at Worldfest ’99, 2000 & 2001 in Silver Dollar City, Branson Missouri with their Australiana productions The Cooee Australia Show and Cooee Downunder.

In 2002 & 2003 they performed at Dolly Parton’s famous theme park “Dollywood” in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. 2004 saw them return to Worldfest in Branson. Since 2001 Aubrey & Martin have toured with various Aboriginal performers presenting The Australian Kaleidoscope – Out of the Dreamtime, an educational/musical presentation for US schools throughout the Midwest.
